Prof. Dr. Maic Masuch (*1966) holds the chair of Media Technology at the Faculty of Engineering, Department for Computer Science and Applied Cognitive Science, at the University of Duisburg-Essen since October 2008.
Maic Masuch received his PhD with a dissertation on computer animation at the University of Magdeburg and, in 2002, became Germany’s first professor for Computer Games. He is researching and teaching in the field of game design and game development for over twelve years and is one of the pioneers of German video game research. In 2007 he was visiting professor at the Duke University, North Carolina, and was offered a professorship for Digital Learning Games at the University of Applied Science Trier. In the past years he supervised more than 200 student game projects with a broad range of complexity. Additionally, Prof. Masuch is the co-founder of two enterprises and acts as Science Angel at the University of Duisburg-Essen supporting the early stage of start-ups in the field of multimedia technology.
The Entertainment Computing Group led by Prof. Masuch is actively involved in research and teaching in the field of Entertainment Computing. The research focuses on two main areas: game design/game development and the relation between playing and learning. This involves many interesting fields like stereoscopic gaming, Interaction and user experience design, game authoring, and interactive media environments for children. Entertainment computing incorporates a broad range of applications for game design ideas in the field of education, health care, training and most of all fun.
